I will be working in a social care environment and providing an element of teaching and working with a wide range of people including school age children, children with disabilities and young adults. I will also be implementing extra-curricular sport activities and introducing art projects; both of which I have a passion for and would love to share this passion with my new community. My aim is to be a reliable, warm, positive and enthusiastic role model for everyone I come into contact with.
I am very excited that I have been given this experience of a lifetime by Project Trust to help make positive changes overseas and I am really looking forward to this life changing experience. I am keen to share my skills and make a real difference. I am very lucky to have been selected after a rigorous selection process and the benefits of this opportunity will be evident for years beyond my return. From a young age I had the desire to travel and immerse myself in a different culture, open up new opportunities and welcome experiences that I may never encounter otherwise.
I have received a huge amount of support to get to the final selection stage and in fact I have been overwhelmed at the support from my family, friends and my community overall since receiving confirmation of my appointment last month. My mission now is to raise the £5600 funding required! I have approximately just under eight months to achieve this goal and already I have been busy discussing and organizing various events in my community including a Race Night, Boxing Show, Sponsored Walk up Ben Nevis, Christmas Hampers, Dress down days at school, baking stalls, table top sale, throw rotten vegetables at our Head Teacher… and various other events that I am determined will be achievable in the months to come.
I have also set up an on line sponsorship page www.virginmoneygiving.com/ShannonHartleyProjectTrust along with a Facebook page promoting my story so far www.facebook.com/ShannonHartleyProjectTrust, giving regular updates to all my followers. The local Press is also following my project and I will be setting up an on line blog. My fundraising is going well and I believe that I am well on target (hopefully) of raising £2000 by mid January 2014.
I will be representing my own community and sharing experiences of my own culture and local environment. I am fortunate that our own community has come through a period of positive change and the hope of a very positive future for generations to come. I would plan to utilize my experience and hopefully have a clearer understanding of what I would like to achieve upon my return. My volunteering for a whole 12 months gives me the period of time to appreciate the complete cycle of all the seasons in another country and experience different ways of life. I would also expect to learn new skills from the country that I am visiting and would like to share my experiences and promote the wonderful work of Project Trust upon my return.
